Keybinds

The keys Vantage adds to Minecraft's Controls, every key a feature can use, and how to change any of them.

Vantage's keys come in two kinds, and each kind is changed in its own place. A couple of them, the key that opens the menu and the key that opens the HUD editor, are ordinary Minecraft controls, set in Minecraft's own Controls screen. Every other key belongs to a feature and is one of that feature's options, set on its page in the Vantage menu. This page explains both, lists every feature key with its default, and covers the keys that work inside Vantage's own screens. It is for anyone who wants to bind, change or find a key. It describes Vantage 2.0.1.

Keys in Minecraft's Controls

Vantage registers 2 Minecraft key mappings, in a category of their own called "Vantage":

ActionDefault key
Open Vantage menuRight Shift
Open HUD editorNot bound

You change them where you change any Minecraft key: Options, then Controls, then Key Binds, and scroll to the Vantage category. Like Minecraft's own keys, they are read while you are in game with no other screen open.

Open Vantage menu opens the menu on its first category. If you unbind it, /vt still opens the menu, and the setup's welcome step shows "the Vantage menu key (not bound yet)" where the key's name would be.

Open HUD editor starts unbound. Bind it if you rearrange your HUD often; otherwise /vt hud and the HUD Editor button in the menu do the same. The editor this key opens has no screen behind it, so closing it returns you to the game.

Keys that belong to features

Every other key Vantage uses is an option of a feature, shown with the feature's other options on its page in the Vantage menu. These keys never appear in Minecraft's Controls screen, and changing a key in one place does not change the other.

Because they are options, feature keys behave like every other setting: they are saved in your active config profile, so two profiles can use different keys; they travel with an export; and a reset puts them back to their defaults.

Most feature keys start unbound, so nothing Vantage does takes a key away from you until you give it one. A few start bound because the feature is built around them; they are listed in Keys that start bound.

Setting a key in the menu

  1. Open the feature's page in the Vantage menu. Searching for "key" finds most key options, at most three from any one feature.
  2. Click the key's button. It fills with the accent colour, pulses, and reads "Press a key".
  3. Press the key you want. The button now shows its name.

To bind a combination, hold Ctrl, Alt, Shift or the Windows or Command key first, then click the button (or press Enter on it) and press the key while still holding the modifier; the button shows it as, for example, "Ctrl + Shift + K". A modifier you press after the button reads "Press a key" is bound on its own at once, such as "Left Shift".

To bind a mouse button, click on the button with it while it reads "Press a key": "Mouse 4" and "Mouse 5" are the side buttons, and "Left Click", "Right Click" and "Middle Click" work too.

Bind a keyPress it while the button reads "Press a key"
Clear the keyPress Escape while it is listening, or right-click the button
Cancel without changing itClick anywhere else
Put the default backUse the reset arrow beside the button; its tooltip names the default

An unbound key reads "None". Letter and symbol keys are named the way your keyboard layout labels them; the number pad keeps names such as "Numpad 1" so they never look like the number row.

How a combination matches

A key with modifiers fires only while every modifier it names is held: "Ctrl + K" needs Ctrl. Either the left or the right modifier key counts.

Extra modifiers are ignored. A key bound without modifiers fires whatever else you are holding, so "K" also fires while you hold Shift. If you want two different actions on K and Shift + K, bind the plain one to something else.

Where a feature key works

Feature keys are read in one of two ways, and the option's own description says which applies.

Pressed keys act once, when you press them. A key that acts in the world, such as opening a screen or switching an overlay, fires only while you are in a world with no menu open, the same as Minecraft's own keys. Auction Alerts' key says so: "Only fires while no menu is open." When a feature acts on such a press, Minecraft's own control on the same key does not also receive it.

Held keys are checked while you hold them: peek keys, tooltip modifiers, bypass keys. Vantage reads the physical key directly, so a held key works inside a menu wherever the feature looks for it. Chat Peek shows the full chat history while you hold its key; the Bazaar planner's tooltip lines appear while you hold Left Shift over an item.

Some keys exist for one menu only and act only while it is open: the Auction Browser Panel's focus key works inside the auction house, and the Spirit Leap Overlay's keys work inside the Spirit Leap menu. A few say they work everywhere: the Storage Overlay's and the Item Browser's open keys work "in the world and inside any menu".

Keys that start bound

As of 2.0.1, these feature keys have a default. Every other feature key starts as "None".

FeatureOptionDefaultWhen it acts
DirectorPeek keyHWhile held, with the Director running
Bazaar Execution PlannerTooltip modifierLeft ShiftWhile held over an item, when the planner's tooltip is set to need a key
Chat PeekPeek keyZWhile held, in a world with no menu open
Spirit Leap OverlayFirst to Fourth target1 to 4Only inside the Spirit Leap menu
Farming tooltip tweaksBreakdown hotkeyLeft ShiftWhile held over a farming tool
Commit guardTake the reminderYOnly while a commit guard card is on screen
Commit guardDismissNOnly while a commit guard card is on screen

The Spirit Leap keys and the commit guard's keys act only while their menu or card is showing, so they do not take 1 to 4, Y or N from the rest of the game. The Director and Commit guard features are themselves off by default.

Every feature key

These tables list every key option, by the menu category of its feature, as of 2.0.1. Each feature's name links to its reference page, where the option's own description says exactly what the key does. "None" means the key starts unbound.

Some keys only work while another option of the same feature is on. Until it is, the key's button is greyed out and cannot be changed. The reference pages mark each of these "Depends on".

Farming keybinds is the one feature that works differently. Its eight keys are a second set of movement and click keys that exists only while a farming tool is in your hand: while you hold one, it rebinds Minecraft's own controls to them, and it puts the originals back the moment you put the tool away, open a screen, leave the world or switch the feature off.

When two keys collide

Vantage does not warn you when a key is already in use. The key button accepts any key, including one Minecraft or another feature already uses, so choose a key nothing else needs.

Minecraft's Controls screen shows clashes between its own keys, and Vantage's menu and HUD editor keys are among them. It knows nothing of the keys set in the Vantage menu.

When a clash does happen in the world, the feature usually wins: a feature that acts on a press keeps it, and Minecraft's control on that key does not see it. A held key is only read, never taken, so the Minecraft control on the same key still works while you hold it.

Keys on Vantage's own screens

Vantage's screens answer to the keyboard in the same way, and these keys cannot be changed.
